Energy Consumption
Energy consumption is calculated as the sum of the energy (kWh) consumed when the product is in use for 12 hours, however it is used (e.g. number of cycles, on all the time) and the energy consumed when the product is in standby mode for 12 hours. If a product does not have a standby mode the product is assumed to be left on and the energy score reflects the total energy consumed over a 24 hour period. All energy measurements are taken using calibrated meters and done to a standard protocol for that particular product category.

Water Consumption
Water consumption is calculated as the sum of the water (gallons) consumed when the product is in use for 12 hours, however it is used (e.g. number of cycles, on all the time) and the water consumed when the product is in standby mode for 12 hours. If a product does not have a standby mode the product is assumed to be in use continuously and the water score reflects the total water consumed over a 24 hour period. Lifetime Rating
Most laboratory equipment and consumables have a shelf life. The longer a product is intended to last, the less likely it is that someone will need to replace it. Equipment that has a proven lifetime of 20 years or more receives a score of 1; chemicals that have a shelf life of 5 years or more receive a score of 1; consumables that are shown to be reusable for several years also receive a score of 1.
