ACT - Assessing the Impact of Manufacturing

Manufacturing Impact Reduction

This captures the efforts a manufacturer has made to reduce energy, water, and waste within the manufacturing process to create the product over the past five years.  A product made by a manufacturer that has addressed all of these areas receives a score of 1; products that were manufactured with no regard for reducing energy, water, or waste receive a 10.

Responsible Chemical Management

Manufacturers are asked to provide evidence of processes and procedures in place to mitigate the risk of exposure to hazardous chemicals and products based on regulatory requirements.  An ISO 140001 Environmental Management System (EMS) or equivalent EMS is the highest standard for this category.  Manufacturers are also asked to provide an SDS/MSDS and/or CAS number for the raw materials used in chemical and recipe products.  The chemicals are screened and scores are assigned based on the presence of carcinogens, mutagens, reproductive toxins (CMRs), and PBTs in the product.  Products for which there is no EMS, no SDS/MSDS, or are considered a GHS Category 1 Hazard receive a score of 10.  Products that do not contain CMRs, PBTs, or are considered a GHS Category 2+ Hazard receive a score of 1.

Shipping Impact

The ACT label was developed for use in the United States, UK and EU, and as such the shipping impact is calculated based on transporting products to the US, UK, or EU.  Manufacturers must provide documentation of product production or assembly in their respective region to receive a lower score.

Product Content

The 'product content' category refers to the use of responsibly sourced materials in making the product.  Manufacturers are requested to provide documentation demonstrating that a product's material inputs are responsibly sourced.  This documentation includes USDA Organic certification, Recycled Content material certification, and Conflict Free Sourcing Initiative Smelter ID(s).  Products made with responsibly sourced raw materials receive a lower score.

Packaging Content

Like 'product content', the 'packaging content' category refers to the use of responsibly sourced packaging materials.  Products that are packaged in responsibly sourced packaging materials, per FSC-certification for wood acquisition or Recycled Content material certification, receive lower scores.
